Patriotic Martyrs' Day: Its Origin and Meaning

Patriotic Martyrs’ Day honors the Koreans who gave their lives in the struggle for independence, from the years surrounding Japan’s seizure of Korea’s sovereignty until liberation in 1945.

Why November 17?

On November 17, 1905, Japan forced the Korean Empire to sign the Eulsa Treaty, stripping Korea of its diplomatic rights. It was the first step toward full annexation in 1910, and it moved countless Koreans to resist, many at the cost of their lives.

A day set by the Provisional Government

In 1939, the Provisional Assembly of the Korean Provisional Government, then in exile in China, designated November 17 as a common day of remembrance for the nation’s martyrs, so that the day of national loss would never be forgotten. The Provisional Government held a ceremony every year until liberation.

After liberation

Families and private groups carried on the observance. From 1970 it was folded into Memorial Day (June 6), until it was restored as a national commemoration day in 1997. Today the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs holds the ceremony each year. Counting from 1939, 2026 marks the 87th observance.

Korean Americans and the independence movement

The struggle reached far beyond the Korean Peninsula. Korean immigrants in Hawai‘i and on the U.S. mainland organized groups such as the Korean National Association and raised funds for the Provisional Government, even amid the hardships of immigrant life. We remember all who gave their lives for Korea, at home and abroad.
